How to Cope while Job-Searching©

Job searching has been stated to be "one of the hardest jobs you'll ever have". Some people are able to find employment in a matter of weeks; others take much longer. In order to maximize your adjustment, your ability to obtain your goals, and your peace of mind, we offer the following suggestions:
  1. Develop a routine and structure to your day and week. For example, get up at the same time each day; go to sleep at the same time night after night; eat healthful meals; etc.

  2. Exercise on a regular basis. We recommend a minimum of twenty minutes of aerobic exercise 3-4 times per week. Regular exercise promotes health, reduces stress, and helps promote energy and vitality.

  3. Set goals…work goals, personal goals…and take steps to achieve them.

  4. Itemize personal, home, and other projects that you have wanted to complete. This is the time to clean up the garage, paint a room, repair a tangible item - to see results. Job searching can be much easier if you can balance your time, knowing that you are accomplishing added projects while searching.

  5. Reward yourself. The ultimate reward is finding the right job and then getting it. However, to only focus on the result may promote discouragement. Instead, learn to reward yourself for completing smaller accomplishments along the way. For example, you may choose to attend a less expensive matinee movie, if you make five phone calls and send two resumes. You may choose to take Friday off, if you complete all your goals from Monday through Thursday. Learn to pat yourself on the back, instead of solely waiting for others' approval.

  6. Take time to be alone, yet also plan balanced time with others. Encircle yourself with supportive, caring people who lift your spirit. Minimize your time with negative thinkers. Carefully select inspiring television shows, movies and reading materials.

  7. Learn something new Perhaps this is the time to take a course to update your skills, to challenge your mind with a good book or lecture. It helps to keep your mind sharp and to know that you are still progressing.

  8. Volunteer. People need to feel productive and contribute. Choosing a volunteer project where you can help others will remind you that you count - job or no job! For example, you could volunteer at a hospital, the American Red Cross, your place of worship, walkathon, soup kitchens, helping a neighbor or friend…or assisting Habitat for Humanity build a house! Whatever you choose, make it personally fulfilling.

  9. Note what you do have, instead of solely focusing on what you feel you are lacking.
